Taking the Living Room Outdoors

It’s about that time of the year again! Time to get outside in the warm weather and enjoy Mother Nature after being stuck inside all winter, we need to get outside and enjoy all that we’ve been missing.

One great way to enjoy the outdoors is to have an outdoor living room. Imagine sitting on a nice, comfortable sofa drinking your morning coffee and listening to the birds sing. Sounds great, but how do we go about getting to that blissful moment? First off, where do you visualize this place at your home?

If you already have a covered porch, you are way ahead. A covered porch is a good option because it offers protection from both the sun and any unexpected rain showers. If you don’t have a covered porch, then maybe think about building a gazebo or pergola. Both a gazebo and pergola can be a do-it-yourself project that can be fun and cost effective.

Next, let’s move onto the staple of an outdoor living room, the furniture. There are plenty of places to buy good quality patio or outdoor furniture, but why not buy it second-hand at a thrift store or an auction? I find that you can score some very unique pieces that are sure to suite any taste. Or, if you prefer new furniture, places like K-mart have the Martha Stewart line of outdoor furniture and you can put it on lay-away. So, now you’ve got a sofa, or maybe some chairs, and a table.

Now, let’s create some outdoor ambiance. You can do this with a variety of things, like outdoor torches, some candles, and an outdoor lamp. The torches and citronella scented candles do double duty because not only are they beautiful, but they will also keep mosquitoes and other biting insects at bay.

You are now ready to go out and create your own private outdoor living room. I really hope that you enjoy sitting in your own little haven, just enjoying the view.

Beware Of That Storage Shed!!!!

When we needed a new storage shed, we didn’t give it a whole lot of thought. We went to a few storage places and decided upon a well known shopping venue. We didn’t want one too big, OR too small, so we picked a 10 X 12 foot shed. We could even pick what syle we wanted, so we picked a nice colonial with matching trim to our house. WHAT A BEAUTIFUL SHED!!! We picked one with shelves on 3 sides! Our shed even had 2 windows!! We jokingly thought, we could almost live in here!!!! This shed also had a wonderful woody fragrance….we were soooo pleased with our new shed, and we got a very reasonable price. Delivery was scheduled for the following week on a day that I would be home.

The shed arrived, and the nice men placed it where we had decided and set it up for us like planned. After the men left, I went out to admire my new shed and immediately, I was dumbfounded. This could not be the shed that we picked out…….it was soooo much smaller!!!! I looked at the dimensions on the sheet and sure enough it read 10X12. I even went and got a yard stick to measure, it also measured 10X12. So I came to the conclusion that it is just like the hair salon or when you try on clothes at the store, everything seems better at the store and then when you get it home, you wonder HOW IN THE WORLD DID I PICK THIS!!!!!

Later that night we started to fill the shed with the lawnmover, the old table and chairs, the old dog houses, the patio chairs, the old vacuum cleaners, the dishes on the shelves, the lamps, the pool supplies, the old televisions……anything that most people want to store……and LOW AND BEHOLD, there was plenty of room!!!

So the moral of the story is: YOU DON’T ALWAYS GET WHAT YOU WANT but IT JUST MIGHT BE BETTER!
